November 2017 AFCEA Luncheon-Deborah Crawford, Laboratory for Analytic Sciences, NC State

November 2017 AFCEA Luncheon

The North Carolina Chapter of AFCEA welcomed Deborah Crawford and Stephanie Beard from the Laboratory of Analytic Sciences to our November luncheon to talk about the Internet of Things (IoT) and how it “is extending the reach of the Internet to inexpensive, miniature, pervasive computing and control devices” and how the DoD is entering a quickly deepening pool of vulnerability.  Ms. Crawford discussed how devices are being used for other than their intended use and the exponential growth which could lead to a new industrial revolution. She explained that as the device depth increases, the policies instituted by the Government Accounting Office (GAO) are proving insufficient.  She also discussed the analytics of what these devices are collecting and creating “patterns of life” that document how we live and the types of events and activities that we engage in our environment.  These patterns of behavior could assist adversaries in predicting what types of actions we will take. Ms. Crawford also stated that the DoD is looking at the “Internet of the Battlefield Things” and how the devices we use on the battlefield impact our communications and how use the information used from them. We sincerely appreciate both Ms. Crawford and Ms. Beard coming to talk to us and provide an excellent presentation.  On behalf of Mr. Paul Reimers, President of the NC AFCEA Chapter, the ladies were presented with a small token of our appreciation.
